An IP68 rating is one of the highest levels of protection a device can have against dust and liquids, if your device is un-opened/un-repaired/un-refurbished (original), from the Factory (OEM) and without physical damages or above threshold drops/bangs/compressions etc. Let’s break down what each digit signifies:

An IP6X rating indicates that the device is completely protected against dust and particles. It is dust-tight and won’t allow any dust to enter, ensuring that the internal components remain clean and functional.
Protection Against Liquids (8)
An IPX8 rating denotes that the device can be submerged in water beyond one meter for an extended period without any harmful effects. This level of protection makes it suitable for activities like swimming and snorkeling. However, it’s essential to note that IPX8 doesn’t specify the depth or duration of submersion, so manufacturers may provide additional details.
Testing for IP68 Rating

Devices may be damaged if water or dust enters the device. In addition, falls, impacts, or physical damages will surely reduce or invalidate the IP68 rating your device had from the manufacturer. For new devices with a manufacturer IP68 rating, follow these tips to prevent damage to your device and to help maintain the water and dust resistant performance:
Do not immerse the device in fresh water deeper than 1.5 meter’s and do not keep it submerged in fresh water less than 1.5 meter’s deep for more than 30 minutes;
If the device is dropped or receives an impact, the water and dust-resistant features may be damaged;
Do not expose the device to water moving with force;
If the device is exposed to fresh water, dry it thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth;
The touch screen and other features may not work properly while the device is in water;
If the device is exposed to any liquid other than fresh water, gently rinse it with fresh water immediately and dry it thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth. Failure to gently rinse it in fresh water and dry it as instructed may cause it to suffer from operability or cosmetic issues.
